Mindful Media Pt 3: Positively Filling Your Time

Whether it’s social media, books, or tv, media is something we consume when we are bored. In Mindful Media part three, I share some sources of media that can positively fill your time!

News

Not only do we look at different types of media for entertainment but also for information.  It’s hard to keep up with all the issues today, especially from unbiased sources. My favorite way to keep up quickly is daily emails from TheSkimm. TheSkimm breaks down world news into bite-sized chunks and delivers in an unbiased way, delivered to your inbox first thing in the morning.

Books

Whether it’s fiction, personal growth, or educational, I always have books on hand or queued up in my kindle! No matter what you’re into, a few I highly recommend are:

  • The Alchemist: teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams.
  • The Four Agreements: reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.
  • The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: detailed guidance for determining which items in your house “spark joy” (and which don’t), this book will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home—and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.

Hobbies

While not a form of media, finding hobbies that keep you learning & growing are always a positive way to spend your time! If you don’t really have any hobbies, no worries – I’ve been there too. In fact, up until five or so years ago, I didn’t have any at all. Now I’m always picking up new ones (like most recently knitting!).  If you’re having trouble, just start exploring something that interests you. For example, I have always journaled. A few years ago, I started looking into different ways to journal and stumbled upon the Bullet Journaling system.  It’s become my favorite way to pass time!

From limiting screen time to filling it with positive influences to lastly finding ways to spend your time, I hope you are able to bring more mindfulness into your relationship with media!
