When I first launched the blog, I promised to write a post about deodorant because of how important I believe it is to make the switch! I transitioned from antiperspirant deodorant a handful of years ago, and I will be the first to admit that it isn’t necessarily easy or quick. But it’s so important when considering your long term health. I am really glad I stuck it out and want to share lessons learned to help you be successful too!
Your body needs to sweat!
And antiperspirants are designed to prevent that from happening. This means your body needs to work a little harder to sweat because those toxins need to get out, otherwise there can be really scary side effects! When you stop using those products, your body will need time to adjust to not having to work in overtime, so don’t be surprised if you experience some extra sweating at first.
Not all naturals are made the same.
I went through a dozen or so of natural deodorants before finding a few brands that really worked for me. There were some that had great reviews that can caused me to get rashes, which I later learned could be a common (for those that have uber sensitive skin like me!). Don’t be afraid to try a couple different ones! Your soul mate deodorant is just around the corner 😉
Here are a couple that I can’t say enough good things about!
LUSH: You all know how much I love Lush products. I have been using their deodorant the last couple months, and it’s probably my favorite one to date.
- Zero waste (no packaging)
- Lasts at least 24 hours
- Easy to apply
- Smells great!
Alaffia: I stumbled upon this brand at Earth Fare and was interested in the charcoal aspect of it. I have tried several different kinds from this brand and have loved each one!
- Need only one swipe (so the stick lasts a long time!)
- Soothes underarms
- Also smells great!!
You will depend on it less and less.
The more time that passes, the more your body will come to a natural rhythm. I very rarely sweat anymore, and even when I do, it really doesn’t have an odor! So if I forget it one morning, I don’t sweat it (see what I did there 😄). In time, your body adjusts to not having to work so hard to get rid of that sweat and can just let it go easily.
Learn from my mistakes.
So in my search for natural deodorant remedies, I kept reading tea tree oil was a solid choice and wanted to give it a try. What wasn’t such a great idea was for me to use only tea tree oil, after cutting antiperspirant cold turkey, while on a trip to Atlanta in nearly 100 degree weather… needless to say, it didn’t quite work out the way I thought it would. 😂 BUT the point is, I didn’t give up on it and wasn’t afraid to try something new!
Do you use natural deodorant? I’d love to hear your favorite brands below!
